XMPP is a mature simple and fast protocol compared to other federated "protocols". "protocols" like matrix are extremely inefficient taking up gigabytes of ram and storage for simple things like a user joining a "room", there are no 1:1 chats everything is a dirty and disgusting room. xmpp everything is beautiful and simple. you want replies just add the other messages stanza id, you want server side spaces just pubsub, you want x y z zoomer features, probably can do without changing server code in the slightest (with le heckin nuance) .
